Free Shipping Supplies and Other eBay Selling Tips

It's been a rough summer and August has been at an all time low for us so it's hard to stay motivated to list list list but we know the better season is coming soon and all this work will be so worth it when it hits.

In this episode we talk about getting Free shipping supplies and I think at one point I try to give away one of my cats, lol. He was being very noisy so I picked him up for a second so you can see my big boy curly joe in this video.

There is some fun at the beginning of the video so I hope you enjoy, we had fun making it.

Thanks for watching !

How We Increased Our July 2016 Sales

Our sales this month have been dismal but we have not let slow sales derail our plans to get to 2000 listings by years end and now more than even is the time to list and because sales are so slow our total number of active listings are really starting to climb. Right now we are very close to 1000 listings !

This week started off strong and I have to say it remained strong all the way to the weekend and just when we thought it was over we got an international sale for $115.00 which is not included in the numbers we talk about in the above video.

Our total sales for the week were a whoping $665.00 and that's pretty good considering how bad the last 2 previous weeks were. Anyway watch the video if you haven't already and please give a tumbs up if you liked it. We are always trying new things and have something going right now which I will talk about next week whether it's successful or not.

Thanks for visiting my blog, I really appreciate you all coming by and taking a look. I don't really know if anyone really gets anything from what I am doing here or not but I do enjoy doing it so it's all good.

Peace !

eBay Says Just Say No To Personal Checks or Money Orders

If your a long time ebayer like we are ( on ebay since 1999) you may not know that ebay has changed the rules on personal checks and money orders. According to the new policy at your no longer allowed to take anything other than ....

  • PayPal
To make checkout faster, you'll now log in to your PayPal account on the checkout page. To skip PayPal login altogether, select the checkbox that says "Remember me for faster checkout on eBay" on the PayPal login box.
  • PayPal Credit
  • Credit card or debit card processed through the seller's Internet merchant account
Your payment is safe and secure. You can choose to save your card to your eBay account. Remove a card anytime in your My eBay account settings.
  • Payment upon pickup
If you offer payment upon pickup, you'll also need to offer one of the approved electronic methods, and may include this statement in your listing: "Contact me for payment methods to pay on pickup."

The only exception to these rules are in ebay motors, coins and bullion and Business and Industrial categories.

I had someone ask me if I would take a check and was about to say sure why not but something told me to google the subject ( little hairs standing up on the back on my neck ) and sure enough I was led directly to the new rules.

I suppose it's really a good thing, those rules were put in place to protect both buyer and seller so yeah just a heads up, if you have done this in the past just be aware the rules have changed so it's no longer allowed.

Peace !

Our Record Breaking eBay Sales Week Ending June 11th 2016

Awesome week, we made 734.05 in gross sales for the week and we had 34 sales, this number increased since I made the video above this morning so slightly lower number in video. This is an all time record for our store !

I also talk about why we quit looking for jeans to sell. I forgot to say in the video that if you can find jeans for $1 then they are worth picking up if they are among the popular brand and size groups but still not on our radar anymore.

Hope your having a great week of sales, remember to just keep listing and those sales will come for sure !

Peace !

May 2016 Our Best Month Ever on eBay

Last year we made a whopping $416.00 for the entire month of May 2015 with 456 items listed and we were being pretty lazy as we listed nothing for the entire month. I had expected close to the same this year as we have only increased our store by 400 listings over last year.

To my amazment this year for May we have sold 91 items and made $2106.00 on ebay and still have 2 days left, WOW !

We are headed out to enjoy Memorial Day festivities with family so I don't have time to say alot but I just wanted to share this with you all. The only thing that has changed between then and now is how much time we are investing into ebay.

Steady steady steady listing. Nothing big, no expensive items, lots of $7 to $10 profit stuff but it all adds up. I hope your all having great sales and we both wish you a very Happy Memorial Day !

Thanks for coming by !

New eBay Supplies, A First Look

I am absolutely LOVING the new eBay branded supplies. I got my first FREE 24 rolls of eBay tape and thought I would share with you guys how I am using it. The only time I am having to use my own tape is to put my backup tracking number on the backside of the package which I do on every single package I send out in case the original mailing label gets wet and obsured while in route to it's destination.

We can only use our coupon once every 3 months so since packing tape is our biggest expense we chose to use the whole coupon on packing tape and I have to say it looks pretty cool. I will warn you however this tape has a terrible odor to it, lol.

Just wanted to throw this out there in case you haven't got a chance to see what the tape looks like. It fit just right on one of my standard Duck Brand Tape roll holders. Those are the green ones you see in the pics. The top one by the sissors is the ebay tape.

This was a genius move by eBay, this is a really cheap form of advertising for them and we have already got several comments from people seeing all the eBay labels asking us questions about eBay, like do we do much shopping on eBay and how do we like it? It always surprises me that there are still people out there who either don't know about eBay or haven't shopped there.

Anyway that's it for now, me and Deidre are taking a little 3 day vacation, just going to goof off for a few days and forget about everything for a while and relax. That's the really cool part of being your own boss, you can take time off anytime you feel like it.

Sales have slowed down this week but still not as much as I have expected. We have done a little over 260.00 this week already and haven't even got to the weekend where we usually make our best sales. I want to thank you all for coming by and taking time to read up on our little retirement experiment.

So far we still have a roof over our heads,  the lights are still on, the phone still works and we haven't missed a meal so I guess we are doing ok :-)

Thanks for coming by !

Strong eBay Sales Continue to Dominate May 2016

We continue to experience extremely strong eBay sales into Mid May 2016 which is breaking all our sales predictions based on years past. I have tried to identify exactly what is different between now and then but frankly I am at a loss.

The only change we have made is in the sheer number of listings we are doing per week now compared to then. We sell clothing and it's not even high end clothing, you can't get that stuff where we live. We continue to learn what kind of clothes we can find and sell from our area even if it's not for a great deal of money.

Even with growth of knowledge on low end clothing that is not enough to explain the abnormally strong sales as opposed to previous years. I have read other blogs and watched others sellers videos and have seen about a 50/50 opinion on whether the number of listings deeply affects sales.

Jay and Ryanne at recently talked about having some really bad weeks of sales with nearly 4000 items listed but they had not listed in a while so it really leads to the conclusion that the number of listings you have may be less important than how often you introduce fresh product.

We have less than a quarter of their listings and sell our items for way less than they do and yet we exceeded their sales on the weeks they did not list so there may be some credence to that conclusion. They began to list again and their sales once again began to rise.

The biggest obstacle seems to be time. There are only so many hours in the day, so how many items can you list in a day? 10, 20, more ? The more you list the greater your return and that affords you more and more inventory to feed back into your business so your business would continue to grow until you simply reached your max time limit.

Well anyway that's my view on what's happening.

For week ending 5/14/2016 we sold 23 items for 536.00 with 790 items listed. We have had no returns for the last 2 months. Our return rate continues to run below 1% and that feels pretty good.

Making eBay's Best Offer Work Flawlessly

When eBay instituted the Best Offer option they really gave us a great tool and it works great in most cases, you accept an offer, the person pays and that's it but what happens when they don't pay? Your item is in eBay limbo for weeks while you try to resolve the problem and in most cases the buyer simply does not pay and gets a strike against them but since they are a zero or low feedback buyer they don't care.

So how do you avoid this little pitfall ? Well the solution we came up with may or may not suit you but it works for us and it works 100% of the time. So when someone sends you a best offer you get a chance to see the person's feedback and that is key.  If the buyer has less than 20 feedbacks then what we do is decline the offer and "Revise" the item where we change the items price to the price the buyer wanted and remove the best offer option.

We then write to the buyer and tell then we accidently hit decline on their offer when we really wanted to accept it but we have a great solution and have changed the items price to the price they asked for and provided a link to the item. Then they can buy it or not but if they do buy it now they are required to pay immediately so no more low feedback buyers scamming us.

We have not had any buyers with an active feedback history of 20 or more give us any payment problems so we accept those on the spot. If they have not bought anything in a long time and have feedback between 20 to 50 then we use the revise method on those buyers as well.

So far we have had a 100% success rate using this method on our best offers so I thought I would share that with you guys. You could always alter this idea in your own way but it really solved a big problem for us. There seems to be groups of buyers that make accounts just to take out items using best offer as a means and whether they are scammers or competitors, the problem exist.

First week of May 2016 was gangbusters, still waiting on the slowdown we experienced last year so that may yet come, we don't know. For Week 1 of May ending on the 7th we made 586.00 on eBay, average price around 22.00.

One last thing on Best offer, Jason Smith from Thrifty Business with Jay and Nay had a great suggestion of pricing your items at least 20% higher than the price you want when using Best Offer so the buyer can get you down a little and feel like they are getting a good deal when they are really just getting the price you wanted all along.

See Ya !

Our Best Week Ever On Ebay ! 35 Items Sold for $659.00

Just a quick post this week to let you know what's happening with us, we sold 35 items last week for $659.00 on ebay. No sales on etsy or amazon but that's ok. We have been busy as a one legged cat in a sandbox for the last week and that is great but I know May is coming and that is normally when our sales come screeching to a halt.

Clothing and shoes continues to dominate our sales and that's just because it's about the only thing you can get in this area. We continue to look for new product sources.

Our Listings are sitting at 744 which is pretty good considering all the sales we have had this month, 67 so far. As I was writing this we just got a sale on etsy so that was cool. That was the first time I actually got to hear the etsy CHA CHING, lol, it's a little different from the ebay cha ching but still a great sound to hear.

We got out of our flea market booth today, it's just not worth it. That booth was costing us 35.00 a month and we only made enough to just pay for the booth for the last couple of months. I feel like I can put my flea market time and money into etsy and do much better so that's the plan. The fact I got an etsy cha ching just now was really just by chance, the plans had already been made.

We are kinda on the fence with Amazon, the fee's are just so high and the shipping credit so unfair. I shipped a doll Wednesday was a week ago and they only gave me 4.99 for the shipping and the little darling was kind of heavy so it cost me like 12.00 to ship so I lost about 7 bucks on shipping.

I dunno, we continue to look at Amazon as a possible but to be honest, I like etsy better. That's it for now, gotta get back to work, oh yeah we have found we can do 20 listings a day if we really work at it so that's new. As a matter of fact I have 20 drafts to complete now so I gotta get back to it.

See Ya !

If At First You Don't Succeed then KEEP TRYING KNUCKLEHEAD

Tony's Tip Of The Week
The Wood Activity Cube For Pre-Schoolers

This one is a bit on the heavy and bulky side but surprisingly economical to ship via parcel post. Created from solid wood and made for pre-schoolers this puppy weighs in around 22 lbs and is often overlooked at garage sales and thrift stores because of its weight. The wood activity cube comes in all kinds of different styles and is an educational moms favorite as it teaches all sorts of fun but practical things.

  • Return rate 0.88%

For the last 2 weeks we have been pretty ebay lazy for whatever reasons there may have been. I do think low sales are depressing and can keep you from being very productive. Anyway now things are starting to heat up on the ole ebay account and it's looking much better.

Sidebar for Pat ... I was about to call ebay to try to get our listing limits raised when they did it without me even asking which was super cool :-)

As you know from reading our blog we live in an area where it's pretty tough to get new inventory cheap that is worth anything significant. We seem to constantly be questioning our buying choices and not without good cause. We have things that have not budged at the lowest prices we can put on them for years.

To increase our sales we are going to have to be much more methodical and precise about what we pick to be in our store. In my estimation you could have a huge inventory but if it's all junk then your still no better off than when you have very little.

I noticed that the newest listings we are putting up have had the greatest amount of movement so that tells me we are moving in the right direction but we just need to get better educated on what we are selling.

One thing I have noticed is that style trumps brand in may cases. You could have a really low end brand but if it has the sought after style then it's got the greatest chance of being sold as long as your not pricing yourself out of the market.

Well that's about it for this week, not much else going on right now. We know we have to get back to work so yeah that's going to happen but we are no longer convinced that simply listing anything and everything is the answer we were looking for, now we will be listing perhaps less items per week but better and higher quality items per week.

I'll let ya know how it goes.

Damn The Torpedoes ! Full Steam Ahead !!

Tony's Tip Of The Week
 Pokemon Plush Toys

This one is pretty specialized but well worth the research. How many times have you gone into a thrift store and saw that huge bin of plush, yeah you know the one, it's so overloaded you can't even see all of them. Well there is a huge following for Pokemon plush toys. Some are worth near the $200 dollar range. I have provided a link below so you can see the recent sold items on these to give you an idea of which ones to look for. Good Hunting !

Average Used Ebay Sold Price Between $50 to $200

Our Week ending March 26th, 2016

  • Total Items in eBay Store: 730
  • Items in Amazon Store: 24
  • Items Sold on eBay: 11
  • Items Sold on Amazon: 0
  • Cost of Items Sold: $25
  • Total eBay Sales: $265.00
  • Total Amazon Sales: $0.00
  • Contract Work: $250.00
  • Total All Sources: $515.00
  • Highest Price Sold: $58.00 (broken camera lens)
  • Average Price Sold: $24.09 (eBay)

  • Number of items listed this week: 62 on eBay
  •                                                   0 on Amazon
  • (all numbers are rounded to nearest whole dollar)
  • Return rate 0.88%

This week I have very much empathized with Admiral David Farragut during the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay who said Damn the Torpedoes Full Steam Ahead ! When sales are down and all seems like a losing battle you just have to batten down the hatches and keep on GOING !!!

And by george that is exactly what we are doing. Yes our week sucked and yeah it could have been better but we are in this for the long haul baby and retreat is not an option !  We managed to list 62 items this week despite the gloom of pitiful sales.

No amazon sales this week, that was harsh. Oh yeah we did have a single etsy sale for $15.00 that is not recorded on my numbers above so that would bring us to $530.00 for the week. You know, this is not an exact science and there is no real proven formula that anyone can just repeat.

Anything you can think of has the potential for greatness on ebay given the right buyer and circumstances. At the end of the week we were ready to crawl into a bottle of Jim Beam but we didn't which is good since we don't drink. We even considered selling diapers at one point, lol.

I think the best course of action that we can do or that you can do is just keep going with what is working for you. We sell clothes on a regular albeit shaky basis so I think we just need to stick to that for now. I did sell one book last week on ebay of all places. I had it listed for less on Amazon for longer and it just would not sell there so that was weird.

After talking to Nicole from the College Fund thrifter last week  and now after selling a book I am thinking about books again. Nicole was talking about selling cookbooks and I see those all the time so I gotta put those back on my radar.

I hope your week was far better than ours but even if it wasn't don't let the gloom get you, JUST KEEP ON LISTING !!!! One thing is for sure, the sun is still gonna rise and the earth is gonna keep going round and round so don't sweat it.

Thanks for Reading,

Our Mid March Report

Tony's Tip Of The Week
Tundra Canada Sweaters

Average Used Ebay Sold Price Between $50 to $75

These awesome sweaters are always a sweet find whenever your out thrifting. Many times they are overlooked because the name is not well known anymore. The Tundra Knitwear Canadian factory went out of business back in 2002. They have the Aussie Coogie look to them but in my opinion have much higher quality.

Our Week ending March 19th, 2016

  • Total Items in eBay Store: 681
  • Items in Amazon Store: 27
  • Items Sold on eBay: 11
  • Items Sold on Amazon: 2
  • Cost of Items Sold: $65

  • Total Amazon Sales: $341.00 (after fees)
  • Contract Work: $250.00
  • Total All Sources: $801.00
  • Highest Price Sold: $295.00 (Amazon sale)
  • Average Price Sold: $19.09 (eBay)

  • Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0.00
  • Number of items listed this week: 40 on eBay
  •                                                   14 on Amazon
  • (all numbers are rounded to nearest whole dollar)
  • Return rate 0.91%

We have had a sick kitty this last week, one of our babies, Moe had a growth on his right foot that had to be removed so we have been back and forth to the vet over the week. I'm happy to say the surgery to remove the growth was a success and he is doing well and on the mend. Moe is a 12 year old Tux and has been a real trooper.

Our ebay sales have been slow but steady. We listed a little but with so much going on with Moe and the vet we just didn't get much ebay done this week. We sold a digital camera on Amazon for 295.00 last week and that helped bring our sales up tremendously.

We are still learning on Amazon, it's a great marketplace and we have made around $2000.00 over the last 2 months on there but getting new items to sell is proving to be a challenge. Either we have no access to the category or the item is a slow seller so that is a venue we continue to investigate. I don't think we will ever do FBA. I like shipping the item myself.

Clothing continues to dominate our sales on ebay, hmm what a surprise... not. Shoes and boots came a close second. Some digital camera equipment we picked up at auction continues to sell nicely on Amazon.

Hope your sales are up and your making that Cha Ching sound go crazy on your phones!

March eBay Sales Off To A Strong Start

Tony's Tip Of The Week
2016 Hot Wheels The Original Batmobile

The Original batmobile fashioned after the batmobile featured in the old batman TV series from the 60's starring Adam West is one of the most valuable and sought after Hot Wheel cars that has come out this year.

226/250 is part of the 2016 Super Treasure Hunt set and 1/5 in the Batman series. The iconic black car features red graphics, red pin stripes, a red bat logo outlined in white on the doors, and “TH” on the trunk. Dark gray flames can be found on the hood and trunk. There is another batmobile that came out this year, its the new one featured in the upcoming Batman VS Superman movie. No real value yet but it might be worth picking up as the value should go up if the movie is a success.

It seemed pretty slow on ebay over the last 2 weeks but things are starting to pick up. We had 3 ebay sales and 2 really good amazon sales today which are not counted on my numbers above. Me and my wife were both under the weather on week ending March 5th and then this last week it has been non-stop rain and by that I mean flood type rain which prevented us from getting to the storage locker to take photos so we haven't done much listing.

We are feeling much better now so we should be getting back into it now hard and heavy. The weekend sales have really been great so we have much optimism about our coming weeks in March. So far we have done about $900.00 between Amazon and eBay in March so that makes us feel pretty good. We just have to keep the train moving forward and it should be fine.

I will try to post some pictures of the stuff I got at auction on my next post. By the way I have found that better pictures are making quite a difference so that is something to consider. I hope your sales are up and I wish you all good health.

A Sellers View of eBay's CEO Devin Wenig

What makes a good CEO a great CEO ? When they really understand what is going on with the company that they have been chosen to run. I think many times the job itself is buried in so much corporate nonsense that this important leader becomes so out of touch with how the companies policies are affecting the health of the company that it begins to fail slowly over time.

Kudos to Mr Devin Wenig for stepping outside the cookie cutter CEO mentality and actually taking a real interest in how to make ebay a better company not only for buyers but for sellers as well. For without a healthy supply of a wide variety of sellers there would not be nearly as many buyers.

When we first decided to run an ebay business for a living the company policies were so stringent and foreboding that we were actually scared of the company and were constantly trying to figure fallback plans in case we just woke up one day and our ebay business was closed down for some minor infraction of the rules.

We are so pleased with the new CEO that those thoughts are no longer part of our business strategy and now we can just focus on building a successful ebay business. We feel like we are part of something really great again and no longer have that it's them against us feeling. Feels more like a partnership than ever before.

I was just thinking about this today and how much me and my partners feeling toward ebay have completely turned around since Devin Wenig took over. Feels like we can all breath again, lol. Running an ebay store is hard enough without being afraid of having the rug pulled out from under you for things you can't control.

At least now with the new policies in effect our future with ebay is in our hands and I have to say that feels pretty damn good.

Have a good one !

February Sales End As Our Best Month Ever on eBay

snapshot of our Paypal account

Our Week ending February 27, 2016
  • Total Items in eBay Store: 616
  • Items in Amazon Store: 15
  • Items Sold on eBay: 19
  • Items Sold on Amazon: 1
  • Cost of Items Sold: $46.00
  • Total eBay Sales: $400.00
  • Total Amazon Sales:$54.00 (after fees)
  • Contract Work:250.00
  • Total All Sources:704.00
  • Highest Price Sold: $66.00 (Amazon sale)
  • Average Price Sold: $21.05 (eBay)
  • Returns: 0
  • Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $390.00
  • Number of items listed this week: 4 on eBay
  •                                                   Zero on Amazon
  • (all numbers are rounded to nearest whole dollar)
  • Return rate 0.78%

I hate to admit it but as slow as sales have been in February it will have to be logged in as our best month ever on eBay with over 1400.00 in sales and still one more day to go.

Now I know 1400.00 isn't big money to many ebayers but for us it is pretty good. To reach our monthly minimum for paying our bills we only need 1900.00 a month from online sales so for us just starting out with just over 600 listings and to nearly make that goal it is very encouraging.

The road ahead is going to be difficult for us, we now have to hit a 100 item a week listing average to meet the minimum listing goals we have set for ourselves so that's going to be no easy task but we are definitely up to the challenge!

We have traveled over 1200 miles in the last 2 weeks gathering new inventory and had a blast doing it but now it's time to do the hard work of cleaning, photographing and listing. The way it will go for us is to photograph for 3 days and to list for 3 days with 1 day for cleaning. We will continue that until we run out of inventory again.

Now me and my partner will do everything together from cleaning and photography to listing so that makes it much easier. On the days we list I will do 17 listing and she will do 16 listing for a total of 33 per day, I will do an extra one sometime during the week to get that magic 100.

Unfortunately there just isn't enough quality inventory close by for us to just go sourcing locally each week but we like to travel so that's not an issue. New Orleans is only 100 miles from us and we love the Big Easy so that's always a fun trip.

I have tried to figure out why we did so good in February and honestly I don't know. I took a lot of low dollar best offers and while we did have some higher dollar sales we only had 5 that were 50.00 or more with the highest being a 150.00 jacket. Almost 100% of our February sales were clothing and shoes.

I don't think it's really possible to figure out why people buy what they buy or figure out what they want to buy when it comes to ebay so I guess the trick is to just keep listing like crazy and the sales will come. I'm sure there is some math to what I'm saying somewhere like your going to sell such and such percent of everything you list but who knows.

( Shout out to Pat Smith, I hope your weekend sales were really good, we had a pretty great weekend as you can see)

Yall have a goodun !

I looked at my ebay "All Selling" page the other day and I noticed we were top rated POWER SELLERS, I had to chuckle a little, I mean we are still little fish in the great eBay sea so I'm pretty sure that the criteria for that title isn't all that exclusive.

Anyway as you can see we had another slow week but no big deal, we continue to feed the beast. Starting next week we are back to business as usual. We got a huge pile of stuff from a guy who was cleaning out his grannys garage so can't wait to start going through all that.

My mind is still numb from all that tax stuff though, omg, we ain't never putting that off for an entire year again. Me and the wife had a business meeting, lol, yep we sat down together and talked about the business and what we could do to improve our sales.

The meeting was good, we came to an unanimous decision on what the most productive thing we could possibly do to get more sales and that was simply to list more items and then we had to figure out how we could do that. Ok first problem was having enough new product to list so that was solved by setting minimum buying totals to 100 items a week.

Now we normally go out once or twice a week to go sourcing and we didn't have any buying goals but now we have to go out over and over until we hit that minimum each week so we are motivated to look harder for more.

And finally we decided we could add another 34 items to our photography and listing process a week and that would allow us list 100 items a week so that is pretty big for us, that means we will be growing by about 400 items a month..

Now I will say we ain't spring chickens and listing 400 items a month is a lot for any age but more so for mam-maw and pap-paw so it's going to be a challenge for sure but we are gonna do it.

We have also bought a slightly older but better than what we had camera to use for pictures, a Olympus Pen E-P3 DSLR 12MP camera. I have been taking the pictures with our iPad mini's and the pictures look ok but the camera has much higher definition so hopefully our items will have more appeal. I mean heck it can't hurt now can it? lol

So more listings, better pictures and that's the game plan, we just gotta go do it now. Hopefully we will be killing it in a couple more weeks so stay tuned.

Yall have a good one !
