New eBay Supplies, A First Look

I am absolutely LOVING the new eBay branded supplies. I got my first FREE 24 rolls of eBay tape and thought I would share with you guys how I am using it. The only time I am having to use my own tape is to put my backup tracking number on the backside of the package which I do on every single package I send out in case the original mailing label gets wet and obsured while in route to it's destination.

We can only use our coupon once every 3 months so since packing tape is our biggest expense we chose to use the whole coupon on packing tape and I have to say it looks pretty cool. I will warn you however this tape has a terrible odor to it, lol.

Just wanted to throw this out there in case you haven't got a chance to see what the tape looks like. It fit just right on one of my standard Duck Brand Tape roll holders. Those are the green ones you see in the pics. The top one by the sissors is the ebay tape.

This was a genius move by eBay, this is a really cheap form of advertising for them and we have already got several comments from people seeing all the eBay labels asking us questions about eBay, like do we do much shopping on eBay and how do we like it? It always surprises me that there are still people out there who either don't know about eBay or haven't shopped there.

Anyway that's it for now, me and Deidre are taking a little 3 day vacation, just going to goof off for a few days and forget about everything for a while and relax. That's the really cool part of being your own boss, you can take time off anytime you feel like it.

Sales have slowed down this week but still not as much as I have expected. We have done a little over 260.00 this week already and haven't even got to the weekend where we usually make our best sales. I want to thank you all for coming by and taking time to read up on our little retirement experiment.

So far we still have a roof over our heads,  the lights are still on, the phone still works and we haven't missed a meal so I guess we are doing ok :-)

Thanks for coming by !
Tony

  1. Tony, I just hit 1,000 listings today, and I am so excited that I am telling anyone who will listen to me - ha ha! The good side of sales slowing is that I could finally get to this goal of mine. I had hoped to reach this point sooner, but I had a lot of sales every time that I listed, and I just do not have as much time for listing once the weather warms up because I have so many outside things that require my time and attention.

Enjoy your break and I bet you come back very refreshed and with renewed energy for ebay.

I am glad you shared the Ebay tape pictures. I used my coupon to buy polymailers, because I use them regularly, and it is nice to save that expense. The polymailers are very nice, also. I think it is a great move by Ebay to provide these coupons for purchasing shipping supplies, and I provided that feedback to Ebay during one of my recent calls with a CS Rep. The colors are so cheerful, and that's what I think I like the best. Anyways, enjoy your break.

    1. 1000 WOW ! That is Amazing !! I hope to be there by next Month, we are still hovering in the lower 800's right now but next week we are going in HOT ! This last week we had to move our storage locker merchandise to a new larger locker and gahhhh I am glad that is over.

Our sales have finally slowed down too, they came to a scretching halt this weekend, lol. We made about 285.00 for the week. Saturday isn't over so we could still do something but I'm doubting it.

Thanks for comeing by and sharing your news Pat, I am so proud of you, that is a HUGE milestone ! Congrats !

  3. Tony, Thanks for the Congrats! I started the year with 802 listings, and set two goals for myself for the year. One goal was to end 2016 with 1,200 listings; and my "stretch goal" was to try and increase by 100 listings a month. And truly, that is a stretch goal if ever I have seen one. Let's just say that I am happy to just be increasing anything at all, because last year I went behind in May and August when I was selling more than I could list. It was just flat out depressing, and I never want to have that happen again. But I certainly learned that my summer months are my months when I struggle to get very many listings added, at all.

You are amazing if you and your wife can hit 1,000 listings that quickly! You two have really turned into listing-machines. I look forward to hearing how it goes.

One thing that I am learning is that it gets harder and harder to increase the number of listings, because sales go up with a higher inventory. It is a strange correlation, and I was not anticipating that sort of effect when I set my goals back in January. Anyways, it sure is fun to hit personal milestones like this, and thank you for allowing me to share. I am rooting for you to get to this same point, very soon!

    1. we have found our stride on listing for sure but we are still learning about what to sell, everytime I think we have it figured out, ugghh well anyway we are getting better and I think that will come with time.

1000 listings will double what we have had for the last few years, we are still in the 800's so that is only 300 over our highest number in the past and yeah it's really hard because the more we list the more we sell and it makes it hard to stay ahead of the curve. We sold over 300 items last 90 days so we have had to list 700 items in the last 90 days to get to 800 because we started around 400.

Sometimes we feel like hampsters on a wheel, lol

At 500 we were making like $1000.00 a month so it seems logical that 1000 listing should net $2000.00 a month. I guess we will have to wait and see on that. Our current Gross profit this month is right at 1400.00 and we have 1 week to go.

      I can't wait to reach 1000 listings :-)

  4. Tony, Thanks for your very kind words!

I was at 802 Items on January 1st, and I set two goals for myself for this year. One goal was to list 1,200 items by the end of the year, and I believe that I can make that goal. My other goal was my "stretch" goal to increase by 100 listings each month, and I just cannot see myself making that goal at all; but I am very glad that I set it up as incentive to try harder, and work faster.

You guys are really listing a whole lot these days, which should really help increase your sales; that is so awesome! Any listing tips to share?

    1. Sorry for the moderation thing, I was playing around with the settings and accidently turned that on. I'm sure that caused some confusion but as far as listing tips go I think everyone has their own speed, it's mainly just a matter of sticking to a schedule. We start at 7am and take 20 photos, we then measure if its clothing and the whole process takes about 3 hours most of the time. Then we list and this takes us about 4 hours, we do about 5 items an hour. It takes a little longer for us because I am editing the photos and taking the background out of the main photo most of the time to it will POP ! lol

  5. Tony, I enjoyed hearing about your listing process, and schedule. I think that keeping to a schedule like that requires a lot of discipline, and it is certainly paying off for you. I have struggled with getting into a good schedule, so you are giving me great ideas.

Do you pack at night? I do all of my packing right after dinner, and it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending upon how many items need to be packed and shipped.

I have a large part of my inventory devoted to sweaters (around 250 items), but this winter was very mild and consequently, I sold very few sweaters. I blamed it on El Niño. But it forced me to reassess my buying habits, and I believe that in the future I will buy more tops and blouses. They take up less storage space than sweaters, plus I usually take fewer pictures of each item, which is a time saver. I think that constantly reassessing what works and what does not work is a critical element of success on Ebay. And it sounds like you are always reassessing, also.

I am hoping that having 1,000 items (and more each month) in my store gives me more consistent sales, plus higher dollar amounts each month. I will let you know how it goes. So far, I can say that this month should be about double what I made last year in May when I had 583 items at the end of May. So that certainly feels great. But like you said, this is generally the start of the summer slowdown, so my year-to-year comparison is all that seems meaningful right now.

Hope you guys enjoyed your time away from Ebay, and had lots of sales while you were relaxing!

  6. Yeah I kind of left out the packing part didn't I? lol

I do pack at night, it usually takes me about an hour or less depending on how many items we have going out the next day. If we have more than 10 items then Deidre helps me and it still takes less than 2 hours with her helping me on 11 to 20 items. I enjoy packing so it's kinda my thing.

I hear you on having to reaccess all the time and yeah we do that pretty often and it does pay off. Some brands that used to be hot like "Daytrip" have started to slow way down and other brands that used to be dead have started to gain ground. I think the reason for that is national chain stores discontinue a small number of brands all the time and the customers old favorites are no longer available.

We really enjoyed our 3 day break, we just lounged around the house for 3 days eating pizza and watching the tube, lol

We are fired up and ready to go ! I can't wait to start ebaying tomorrow ! LOVING IT !!!

    2. yep, that's right Pat, we made our bills for the first time which is really good. We are no longer using the 401k money to supplement our income and that is such a relief.

    3. Tony, That's so great that you made enough to cover expenses for the month! And it happened in May, which is not always an active month for retail sales,so that makes it even more encouraging. Sure seems like you have a good formula working for you, now; which is just wonderful!

I was pleased with my May sales because I am finally seeing more consistency on a month-to-month basis, in the past few months. This is better than the wild swings that I have experienced since I started on Ebay. Plus, I am pleased because I did so much better this May than last year, and it would have been even better if I had not had a non-payer on an $80 dress, and another buyer that asked to cancel a sale, which I did to avoid dealing with a seemingly-difficult buyer; plus one return. All of these glitches are part of life on Ebay, of course; but keeping them to a minimum is always my goal. Hope you have an awesome June!
